You mentioned Lean Six Sigma to me once and it was always in the back of my mind. About six months ago I began studying up on it and have been looking at the various tools in the LSS world. I was curious, are there any books that you would recommend that cover company profiles that have used LSS? I came across your blog and saw your Twitter feed as well.

Matthew Randquist
mrandquist@yahoo.comMatthew Randquisthttp://www.linkedin.com/PUB/MATTHEW-RANDQUIST/8/257/298noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8375262941155700240.post-48872227462915610952009-11-17T17:21:50.421-08:002009-11-17T17:21:50.421-08:00I might be going off on a little bit of a tangent ...I might be going off on a little bit of a tangent but...

Had we listened to our forefathers in the first place, we would not have likely had a visual management issue with our current (fiat) currency. Our Constitution clearly states that our money is to be only gold and silver. And had we left well enough alone, our coins would be sized accordingly, and there would not be the nickel and penny as we know it. There would be no confusion for any newcomers.

People like Thomas Jefferson had never heard of 5S, Lean, or Six Sigma. What he did understand, though, was simplicity, honesty, and truth. And a sincere wish to do the right thing. These principles are at the core of every continuous improvement program.

Thorough 5S practices lend themselves to "simplifying" the very foundation that the processes and subsequent improvements rest upon. In fact, any truly effective process is so simplistic that it can appear to not equate to the "greater" outcome that it achieves.

Without "honesty", you cannot reach any accurate conclusion of what the next improvement should be. There must be complete honesty in all that we do.

And "TRUTH"... Essentially, that is what the whole continuous improvment objective is. We are seeking the truth...The best, most truthful method of effectively executing our processes. We are not interested in deceit, untruths, inaccuracies, fallacies, or fraud. We just want the truth. We may not reach the ultimate truth, but that is not exactly the goal. The goal is to seek out and find additional levels of truth, and as we find them, we validate them as being "more" true than what we now believe to be true. Once validated, we abandon our old truths for new truths, and we know they won't be the ultimate truth either, but they will be one step closer. And as long as they are one step closer in the right direction, the new truth will inherantly be more productive and more profitable, either on it's own or combined with other truths.

Unfortunately, there are those such as the Federal Reserve that do not represent simplicity, honesty, and truth. The Federal Reserve was born from out of deceit and dishonesty. It's existence is unconstitutional and it's intent is to perpetuate fraud upon the nation with a fiat currency that was intended to enslave. And just like any business looking to adopt improvment programs, there will always be those who will attempt to keep you from knowing the truth.

Rock on, and may you always find the truth(s).Gigmonger Stinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08816217925897923372noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8375262941155700240.post-38953826518763370902009-10-29T10:03:28.049-07:002009-10-29T10:03:28.049-07:00Thank you all for your comments.

It is a whole lot more.

Despite how long it's been around, people still screw up 5S repeatedly. I think the main reason is that they do 5S because 5S is a lean tool. They do it because it is easy. They aren't doing it because it's solving a problem that they have. 5S should organize the work so that problems become visible. That's its purpose. Consider a NASCAR garage. How does the floor look? It's spotless. Why? Because if there is a single drop of oil, you know about the problem right away. You don't want to wait to find out you have a problem 100 laps into a race.

Here's a simple tool, 5S, but starts off on the wrong foot. It's applied without people knowing why they are doing it.

Jamie Flinchbaugh
www.jamieflinchbaugh.comJamie Flinchbaughhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16714555426822621398noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8375262941155700240.post-58093759993865438732009-10-21T14:55:09.406-07:002009-10-21T14:55:09.406-07:00I guess I'm not surprised at the data and what...I guess I'm not surprised at the data and what it means. A couple of pieces of information I would like to add... as an HR professional, I can tell you that a large number of those uninsured do so at their choice. While I do not know the statistics, a number of young workers who could pay for insurance simply opt not to. They see themselves as healthy, "invincible," and do not wish to spend the money. Second, many of the uninsured as quoted by our government (47 million) are illegal aliens. They often do have bona fide jobs here but often fail to sign up for insurance (or any other benefit like 401(k), etc.) so as to avoid being found out as illegal. Frankly, they should not receive coverage, in my opinion, as they are here illegally. May be a hard edged opinion, but one many Americans agree with. What Congress should address is the pre-existing condition rules. If these are eliminated, (and if Congress mandates that he highest premium per group cannot be larger than a fized percentage of the smallest)people who lose insurance (and COBRA runs out) can get immediate coverage with any current provider - and there are a number out there. Finally, Congress needs to look at liability, malpractice and the often excessive cost of litigation.Ima Newgirlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00420572132061788037noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8375262941155700240.post-59881041952414471182009-08-20T12:26:11.923-07:002009-08-20T12:26:11.923-07:00Great article thanks. I hope that leaders do not forget that one of the most critical keys to any lean transformation is the exchange information. The more you exchange information the more you allow the entire team to benefit from ones learning's.

Clear and defined KPI's must also be a part of the morning meetings, as the team must be able to see baselines and trends. KPI's must paint a picture and should be reviewed in this meeting. This also allows great participation and empowerment from those that might not speak up in team meetings.

Be sure to use the data gathered from your samples and defects, your ability to teach depends on your teams ability to bring issues to the defect table. Do not over look simple items that are brought to the defect table and be sure to keep good records that are reviewed by senior management. The answers are always in the details, they are there if you take the time to look.

I have used morning market and agree that if used properly and with the proper amount of management oversight it can and will change organizations.
